Barbados is the most easterly of the Caribbean islands and the fact that it is flanked by the Atlantic Ocean means that cooling trade winds blow across this coral island.

These winds combine with tropical sunshine to give the island lovely year round temperatures while the amazing beaches in Barbados ensure that visitors will have an unforgettable holiday.

Although the island is quite tiny at approximately 28 miles long by 14 miles across there is much to see and do here and the various coasts of Barbados are all very distinctive. Car hire Barbados is the ideal way to explore them all.

The only airport on Barbados is Grantley Adams international which is located in the south east and has many connections with world wide destinations including the United Kingdom, Canada and America.

Barbados’ capital is Bridgetown and car hire Bridgetown is a good way to get around Barbados and see as much as possible. Bridgetown is the place to go if you want to take advantage of the excellent duty free shopping opportunities available in Barbados.

Most tourists coming to the island either stay on the south coast which offers many mid range hotels or the west coast where the majority of accommodation is in the luxury bracket.

No visit to the island would be complete without a trip to Barbados’ east coast which is very rocky and unspoilt with powerful currents and excellent waves. Indeed the Soup Bowl break in Bathsheba is so appealing to surfers that it is part of the world surfing tour.

Further down the east coast is Crane Beach which is consistently voted as one the world’s best beaches in numerous travel magazines. The Crane Hotel is perched on top of a cliff overlooking the pink sands of the Crane Beach and the azure, but rough waters below. Boogie boards are available for rent on the Crane but exercise caution if you don’t want to get chewed up and spat out.

Barbados’ north coast also overlooks the Atlantic Ocean but is the only coast which has no beaches. Instead there are some spectacular underground caves collectively called the animal flower caves because of the sea anemones which live there.

Coming around to the west coast you will find the Caribbean sea far more tranquil with some stunning beaches, most of which are backed by world class hotels. This side of the island is expensive but has some gorgeous accommodation and restaurants. The calm waters of the west coast are a great place for swimming while the active traveller can also enjoy water skiing, jet skiing, snorkelling and scuba diving. The west coast reefs also create great waves at the right time of year.

The greatest cultural heritage that Barbados gave the world was on the cricket field with the island producing some of the greatest batsmen and bowlers who ever lived. Watching a match in Barbados is a truly joyous experience and the best way to meet the friendly locals. At the Kensington Oval you can try Barbados’ sumptuous rum punch and tasty delicacies such as flying fish and plantain.
